Rack up another huge win for Webster University chess champ Susan Polgar! The world-renowned chess player and her team recently won the Final Four National Championship tournament in New York City – making it five consecutive national titles in a row for Webster with Polgar as coach.
Muny season is upon us. America’s oldest and largest musical outdoor theater kicks off its 99th season this month with “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which runs June 12 to 18. Eight acclaimed vocalists featured in Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ 2017 season will headline the eighth annual Sing for Siteman concert on Monday, June 12. Susannah Biller, Michael Brandenburg, Deanna Breiwick and others will take the stage with internationally renowned pianist and concert artistic director Carol Wong for an evening of song to benefit research projects at Siteman Cancer Center. The University City Children’s Center, recognized as a leader in early childhood education and human development, is preparing for its 12th annual Fairy Tales Can Come True/Year of the Teacher gala this summer. Friends of UCCC recently gathered at the home of longtime supporter Suzie Nall for kickoff festivities for the event, which takes place Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Caramel Room. Also in attendance was executive director Steve Zwolak, a nationally acclaimed early-childhood program innovator.
The African crowned crane is getting its share of the spotlight, thanks to this month’s Zoofari fundraiser at the Saint Louis Zoo. The zoo recently unveiled its 2017 event poster, featuring artist Rob Dreyer’s rendition of the bird, which gets its name from the distinctive “crown” of feathers on its head.
